YOUNGSTERS TO CLEAN UP FOOTPATH
A stone-pavod country path once used by villagers over a
hundred years ago to travel from Kowloon City to Sha Tin is now being
repaired and cleaned up as part of the Government's Countryside
Recreational Development Programme.
Much has been done by the Agriculture and Fisheries
Department to realign and improve the path, which joins with Lion
Rock Park at Lung Cheung Road.
Concrete steps have been constructed at the stooper sections
and 30 rest benches are being installed. A rain shelter will be put
up later this year,
On Monday and Tuesday (March 1 and 2), 60 young volunteers
organised by the Wong Tai Sin City District Office will help remove
litter which has accumulated on the path. On Wednesday (March 3), they
will plant trees along the sides of the path.
A spokesman for the Agriculture and Fisheries Department said
the foot-path was fast becoming a popular country track for hikers and
morning walkers but had been spoiled by soil erosion and durping of litter
by nearby squatters.
The work now being carried out will provide residents in
urban areas with a convenient and pleasant walk to the countryside.
