Lieutenant General Sir Denis O'Connor, K.B.E., C.B.

Lieutenant General Sir Denis Stuart Scott O'Connor, K.B.E., C.B.,

was born in Simla, India and educated at a preparatory school in Eastbourne

and afterwards at Harrow and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was

commissioned into the Royal Artillery in September, 1927. He served in

England until November, 1929 when he was posted to India where he remained

until February, 1936. In December, 1939 he went to France with the British

Expeditionary Force, returning in January, 1940. He continued to serve in

the United Kingdom until he was posted to South-East Asia Command. In April,

1946, he returned to Britain and was posted as General Staff Officer 1

(Operations) to the Middle East Land Forces in June, 1946. In November of

that year he was appointed Brigadier General Staff (S.D.) and held that

appointment until December, 1949. In April, 1951, he became Chief Instructor

at the School of Artillery where he remained until December, 1952. In

January, 1953 he went to the British Army on the Rhine (B.A.0.R.) as

Commander, Royal Artillery of an Armoured Division and stayed in this post

until February, 1955. In March, 1955 he was appointed Director of Plans at

the War Office and held this appointment until February, 1957. He was given

command of 6 Armoured Division in February, 1957 and remained with this

Division until he became Chief Army Instructor at the Imperial Defence College

in February, 1958. He was appointed General Officer Commanding Aldershot

District in February, 1960 and in February, 1962 he became Deputy Chief of

the Defence Staff, Ministry of Defence. He was made a Commander of the Order

of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in June, 1949 and appointed a Companion of the

Bath (C.B.) in January, 1959. He was created a Knight Commander of the Order

of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in January, 1963.
