The Hon. J.T. Wakefield

Mr. James Tinker Wakefield is District Commissioner, New Territories.

He first arrived in Hong Kong in May, 1941 as a Lieutenant in the Royal

Engineers. In December of that year he was taken prisoner of war. and on the

liberation of the Colony in September, 1945 he served in the Civil Affairs

Unit of the British Military Administration with the rank of Captain.

was appointed Cadet Officer, Class II in March, 1947 and served as Assistant

District Officer, New Territories in April, 1947. The post was renamed

District Officer, South in March, 1948. In 1949, ho was appointed Acting

Social Welfare Officer and Assistant Secretary for Chinese Affairs. During

his leave in 1951, he studied the workings of the Singapore Improvement Trust

and was appointed Chief Resettlement Officer on his return to Hong Kong in

December, 1951. He was Registrar of Co-operatives and Director of Marketing

from April, 1954 until his appointment as Labour Officer in January, 1955.

He was appointed Chief Assistant Secretary for Chinese Affairs in July, 1956

and was promoted to Cadet Officer, Class I in April, 1957. He was promoted

to Administrative Officer, Staff Grade B in July, 1959 and, on his return

from leave in April, 1960, became Assistant Colonial Secretary (Lands). He

has been an Official Justice of the Peace since 1948.
