R Kruschev has told the Soviet peoples that if the present economic growth in

Russia is maintained, the USSR will overtake the USA in the year 1970 President Kennedy, sensitive to such statements, us accepted the challenge by calling upon the free Western world to crease its output so that by 1970, collectively, they will show a 60 per cent increase upon present day figuren,, The fact of the matter is that unless some unforeseen dißi- culties arise in the USSR. they will maintain their ex- pansionist economy and will have ધ good chance inf

Berlin, Nov. 20.

The Brandenburg Gate, once the symbol of the main crossing point between East and West, was this morning being firmly walled into Berlin's eastern sector by a force of workmen under strong armed guard.

This dampened hopes that further crossing points between East and West Berlin may be open- ed, following the surprise building activities along the border.

Britain is, seeking

to resolve this dilemma by entering the European Common Market | which,

while throwing down trade barriers among themselves, at the same time erects a tariff against the rest of the world. Obviously, it follows that j should such & tariff be come a permanent barrier against the USA, then the USA as a leader of WEB- tern economy would be in difficulties, and something like Wall Street 1930 might happen again. The Löng term view is the wiser view. The fact is that the days of economic isolation are over. Britain is pretty Com- certain to enter the mon Market, and the next thing is that the U.S. with its market of 180 million people must strengthen its economy by seeking own

Squads of police-supervised workmen were busy yesterday firmly walling up Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate. Our touched-up photograph shows where the new barrier is erected along the demarcation line.

The original wall, put up in August this year, can be seen at the top and bottom of the photograph, stopping just short of the Gate. The Communist Eastern sector is to the left of the Gate.
