Week-End Softball Surprises
MALIG AND VENPIN HURL CHEYENNES, STARDUST TO UPSET VICTORIES
By "TIME-OUT”
It seems that every time I gaze into my crystal ball in an on- deavour to forecast correctly the results of certain`softball matches some "smart Alec" of a player irritates my ulcers by turning in a sparkling performance to upset the form book. This week it was doubly painful because there were two cul-
prits-David Malig of the Senior Cheyennes and, once again, that dynamic Stardust hurler, Gabriel Venpin. Both pitchers made valuable contributions to their sides' victories over South China and the Eagles respectively and "Time. Out" battered sun hat is doffed in salute to them.
The Austers lost 0-10 to the Malig pitched himself out of up. Bosco Kwok's bunt scored Diamonds
on Saturday in a trouble with two runners on amontagne and Murray stole boring game in which the Stanford went losers plugKST hitless and took a dive in his batting average.
Fantastic Display
In
the other Junior match the Cheyennes literally ran rings around the Cardinals in a
garne which they won by 1-4
base in the second ring by forcing Borry Lee to pop up to Cheyenne second-sacker Onofre Souza. Souza then lashed one of "Gonse" Wong's fast balls over left-held with Robert Graca un base for a round trip and the Cheyennes now led 3-0 as the third inning got under way.

Ax for yesterday's games I fail to understand why Eagles-Stardusts match was not put forward to 11.30 am, when there was a free period then.
Instead not only were
the youngsters forced to forgo their lunch by taking the eld at but the starting 1:00 p.m. times of the other afternoon goren were also delayed as a result of this stupid "arrange- ment.
Anyway, the Stardusis game certainly gave the fans their money's worth because tho issue was not decided until the Just two
tlig Innings when scoreboard read "Stardusts 9, Engles 10."
A six-run splurge by the Stordusis in the top of the sixth sert Eagles pitcher W. K. Chan to the showers and substitute hurler Olas tried to kill the rally.
Daring Bunt
A very daring bunt, with the bases loaded, too, by wec Robert Guterres hod
the this
Eagles infield reeling in inning and namesake Carlos hit the plate for the tally which put the Stardusts in the trad by a solitary run,
They then took full advan tage of four walks to round the bases in monotonous fashion to: make it 15-10 to which the Engles could reply with only a pair runs as Venpin, pitching with confidence struck oul Eagle left-fielder Kew to end the sixth frame.
The winners' Wallic Choa scored one more run to make it 16-12 and that was how it li ended because In the final inning, Venpin, facing only four batters allowed the op- position a single and retired the other three ou easy putouts by the Stardusts' infeld,
Despite being nicked for 10 hita Venpin failed to get ruffled while his team-mates jumped on two Eagle pitchers for 13 bita which were more than nough to ensure them victory. Good show, Stardusts....you certainly made me cat my words for tipping you to losell
5 Consecutive Hits
Incidentally, the fifth inning of this game deserves special men- tion. In the 20 odd years softball has been played in Hongkong no team has ever matched the achievement of the Stardusts in getting ave consecutive hits 11. running order--a bunt, #1 single, a double, a triple and a home-run. From left to right tako # bow, Willie Choo, Mahadev Dayaram, Carlos Guterres, George Lam' and Willio Zee. You have made soft- ball history and I am willing to bet that no team will match: yuz feat in the next 20 years.
The Benlor Cheyennes nipped South China 4-2 in the week's big game. Dave Malig, winning hurter didn't put a foot, oops Borry! I mean an "arm” wrong. Batting first the Cheyomnost Manuel Nunes got on base vin an infield error, Antonio Ribeiro was called out on a double bunt and Robert Romedios advanced Nunes to third base on an in- Hold out. Then lefty Tony Tony Rodrigues came to the recus with a cricket · strako which fooled the Nom Wah de- fence - and Nunes, wasted lille time in hitting home plate for the opening nin of the game.
The losers, went down in 1-2-3 order in the first two frames nud
paid off as Lee lossed the pili io centre-field while a grateful heme for Baptista scampered the Cheyennes fourth run.
Raymond Lamontagne spoiled
striking pinch-filtter Cyril Law on a third strike which Law did not
see as it whizzed past ven amid the deafening cheers of the Cheyenne players and sup- porters.
"Goose" gave up five hits but Mallg's no-hit, no-run bid in it was two more than Malig's the bottom of this inning by and that about sums it up. A greeling him
with a rousing great pitching duel with Dave single over second, An infeld Mulig just that shade a better bolible put Doug Murray on ntan in a tense and excliing base. Y. Z. Yeung then popped game.
