Roger Bannister Sends His Congratulations
'RECORD BREAKING JUST BEGINNING'
་་་་་་་
London, Aug. 6.
then
Di Roger Bannister, the first man in the world to crack the four-minuta mile, tonight sent his "heartiest congratulations" to the holder of the new world mile record, Australia's Herb Elliott,
"I never doubted he could run the mile in such a time, and ho has done it jolly wall.
I'm not at all surprised," said Bannister.
"I've watched him run a mila five times in the last few weeks and each time he has
had so much in hand..
"Elliott has gained his niche in the world record book and though he is only 20..
I oxpect he will sit back and relax now."
Bannister believes that record breaking, far from being near this end, is roally only just beginning. "I don't think human beings as they are at prosent built will run a mile in 3 minutes, 30 seconds. There is a sort of “no man's fand": toming, but at present recorda will still be pared off by seconds, though ultimately the margin of reduction will become only tenths of a second at a time,”-U.P.1.
