BRITAIN'S TRADE
THERE is no doubt that Britain's overseas trade
tina
boen going extra- ordinarily well during the past few months despite the netback in April. Its exports in the first quarter of the year averaged £5 million less than in the first quarter of 1967 when the hormal flow of trade was upset by the blocking of the Suez Canal, bot imports averaged £42 million a month less. The gap between imports and exports narrowed to only £24 million a month at the beginning of 1958 and it necount is taken of the fact that the import figures include not only the cost of the goods but a #izablu amount for the
cost of
shipping and insuring them it seems virtually certain that Britain is at present exporting muro than she Importa and warning foreign exchange surplus on her visible trade alone.

National Assembly To

Crisis Session Today
EMERGENCY POWERS WANTED
Paris, May 15.
M. Pierre Pflimlin, the new French Prime Minister, in a dramatic midnight announcement today demanded emergency powers to meet the Algerian crisis, following General Charles De Gaulle's offer to take over.
He said he would ask the National Assembly, called for a crisis session early tomorrow to declare a state of emergency in metropolitan France, which includes Algeria.
This, he said, would give the authorities more power to meet the situation after De Gaulle's Intervention.
He also announced that the Government set up only twe days ago had decided to dis- solve a number of "subversive organisation8."
