A VERY SLENDER VICTORY FOR THE BUSMEN

TWO MORE PLAYING YEARS FOR STANLEY MATTHEWS

Blackpool, Feb. 2.

Stanley Matthews, England's most famous footballer, who was 48 yesterday, sald today he hoped to continue playing for at least two years more. Matthews was commenting on reports that he had been offered the managership of his club, Black- pool, in succession to Mr Joe Smith, who has been given three months' notice. Denying the rumour. he declared: "These reports are entirely false. Even if any offer should be made--and this is highly unlikely should not consider it. I am not interested in the job.

Not Giving Up

"Nor am I giving up playing soccer at the end of the season because of what has happened. I hope to continue in football as a player for at least two more years"

Mr Smith's dismissal was announced yesterday before the start of Blackpool's League match against Aston Villu.

The Villa players presented Matthews with a birth- day gift of a briefcase before the tennis took the field-China Mail Special.

SOME REFLECTIONS ON LAST FRIDAY'S INDIVIDUAL BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Our Boxing Reporter

This is certainly proving to be a lean year for boxing in the Colony. During recent months there has been a mounting appreciation that this is so and it was con firmed in the most significant way when the Land Forces Individual Championships were held at the

team is going to suffer a shock defeat at the hands of one of the lessor lights in the competition. When it happens they will have only themselves to blame for the truth of the matter is that some of the big names in the side are allowing big heads to prejudice the real work of the team. They got a stern last warning yesterday.

On the slippery surface of the Club Stadium they scratched out a very slender 2-1 victory over Jardines. On footballing merit-based on past performances at least-this should have been an easy hurdle for them. Instead we saw them struggling desperately to cling to a solitary. goal advantage which they never really deserved.

The trouble with this star-1 stuckled KMB outfit t't lack of ability, it is a surfeit of a surt of cocky, most contemptuous, confidence which Brxls them taking liberties that are quite unjustled by the run of the play.

Yesterday TUC had several glaring examples of this kind of thing and Lau Tim was the culprit-in-chief. In the early stages he seemed to take a parucular delight in showing the spectators how easily he could dent with even a top class Centre-forward

In spite of all the big show trimmings, slick management, and precise arrangements which we have come to expect from the Army boxing authorities, the naked truth was that the men who stepped into the ring generally lacked the ability that has charue terised so many of their illustrious predecessors.
