Stanley Matthews, England's most famous footballer, who was 48 yesterday, sald today he hoped to continue playing for at least two years more. Matthews was commenting on reports that he had been offered the managership of his club, Black- pool, in succession to Mr Joe Smith, who has been given three months' notice. Denying the rumour. he declared: "These reports are entirely false. Even if any offer should be made--and this is highly unlikely should not consider it. I am not interested in the job.

On footballing merit-based on past performances at least-this should have been an easy hurdle for them. Instead we saw them struggling desperately to cling to a solitary. goal advantage which they never really deserved.
