UN Debate On Algeria

Moves To A Showdown

-Prospects For Adoption Of Proposals Are Dim

United Nations, Dec. 5.

The Algerian debate moved toward a showdown vote tonight with prospects dim for the adoption of either an Asian-African call for French-Algerian negotiations or a Latin American-Spanish-Italian proposal to express again hopes that a solution will be found. The Asian-African resolution appeared to have the backing of a bare majority in committee if there is a moderate number of abstentions. But there was no hope it could obtain the two-thirds majority need- ed for Assembly adoption.
