TELEVISION-SHY FOOTBALLERS: YOU CAN'T BLAME THEM
4
Says TOM FINNEY
To be televised, or not to be televised. That is one of soccer's bly talking points at the moment. Just because some clubs like Manchester United and Not- tingham Forest refused to be televised without payment during training many people
are saying that footballers are prima donpaa.
Is it true that footballers are afraid of looking at the "dickle bird" in the lelevision camera or the pressman's camera without payment?
Let's be quite frank about this. You wouldn't get a troupe of dancing girls to appear on television without being paid. And in the past, some photographers have taken pictures of footballers either individually or in groups, then sold them Nafer at a profit to themselves.
It is for this reason that some footballers ere д ttle cagey about posing before a camera.
This is a ticklish problem, be- cause every thinking footballer must realize that he is a public entertainer that publicity is good for him and helps him in his profession. At the same tine, no man wants to stand by and see others profit from his ability."
TOP-LEVEL TALKS
That is why I belleve, sooner or later, this question of pay- ment for appearing on televi- slon should
be settled at the highest level, with the Players' Union there to negalinte on be- half of professional footballers.
It this were done, Kidividual playera or clubs would not be left on their own to make their own decisions in this matter,

Can we get out of this con- gestion of fixtures? I don't think we can, unless cluba use their floodlights. Then, in- Atead of crowding in two games in a week, they could play three matches in two weeks and with the help of the lights extend the mid-wyck fixtures until Novem-
ber.
I would for rather, however, continue to cram these matches In mid-weck as we do noty (even though It means a helter- sitelter start to the season) rather then extend the season and take up more of cricket's test part of ten months, THAT ime. The season now lost the

On a ticklish problem ke they will stay there. this, I feel that if players are doing their normal training they should not object if they televised or photographed. That in all part of the job.
The time to ask for payment is when players are brought back for special efforts. Atter all, they are then giving up their own time. They are
do. ing special poses or tricks for the cameramen, and they should be paid for showing their skill In this way.
It, however, it is just a nor- mal training shot, then-again speaking personally-I would not object. But for the good of

the game I do hope this matter is settled amicably all round, Television nendy football much.es football needs televi sion. A commonsense approach by both parties should trot out this little storm in a teacup,
INTO ACTION
In my travels round, the world soccer stars from overseas have wech astonished at the way wa "rev" into retion at the start of i the season by playing two gumes a week.
I recall one famous continent- al star saying: "It is crazy, Tom. You don't five time to get pro- perly munich-ft bofore you are plunged into all these matches. -1 is too much for the muscle."
Well, one must admit that the League Championship is often Avon and los: in the first six weeks of the season. A smooth start, freedom from injuries- That's what every manager prays

By the way, did you notice "galen" almost reached the miillien mark last week--and the on a day when the Manchester City v. Sheffold Wednesday
match was cancelled?
That's the stuff to give soccer a shot in the arm, 1 hope this | present trend of bigger" atten- dances continues. After all, what player likes
