It would be unfair to call a "Indiscretion of an American Wife" a long drawn out lovers' farewell on a railway station, because, although on the surface, this is what it might appear to be, it is' in fact à most sensitive ex- ploration of two ordinary people's feelings.

though parting would, penetrating deeper, have been controlled, decisive and dull- possibly they would never have allowed themselves to fall in love in the first place. That they both behave like a couple of overwrought children trying hard to be adult makes them all the more human and pitiable.
