300 YEARS SİNCE PENN
AND VENABLES LANDED
Kingston, Jamaica, Feb. 24. Jamaica is, planning island-wide celebrations this year to mark the 300th anniversary of the landing of Admiral Penn and General Venables at Passage Fort, near Kingston, on May 10, 1655.
This landing marked the beginning of British rule in Jamaica, although the island was not formally ceded to England by Spain until the signature of the Treaty of Madrid in 1670. The Spaniards had taken possession of it in 1609, fifteen years after its discovery on May 3, 1494, by Christopher Columbia, who called it St Iago--St James.
This year's celebrations, being held under the slogan "Jamaica 300," will commemorate 300 years of progress and development as a member of the family of the British Commonwealth Nations.
