HALBERG AND FERGUSON RETURN FASTEST TIMES IN ONE MILE HEATS
Vancouver, Aug. 5.
Murray Halberg of New Zealand and Rich Ferguson of Canada clocked 4 minutes 7.4 seconds and 4 minutes 7.8 seconds respectively to return the fastest times in the heats of the One Mile run at the Empire Games here today. The Duke of Edinburgh was one of the spectators in the crowded stadium.
Both finished ahead of Roger Bannister (4:08.4) and David Law of England (4:08.6) while John Landy, with Bannister one of the only two men ever to have beaten four minutes for the distance, was content to finish third in the other heat in a modest 4 minutes 11,4 seconds behind Bill Baillie of New Zealand and Victor Milligan of Northern Ireland in a near dead-hen! finish.

In a few weeks I shall be off to America, leaving behind me memories of my 15 years as a top-line professional footballer.
In a way, I shall be thankful I am going. Ever since Scotland's World Cup debacle we've heard nothing but words--millions of 'em-of wisdom from the armchair "players." Everybody knows what's wrong with Scottish football. Everybody knows the answer.
