Iceland

Fumes Over

Its Missing Mediaeval Manuscripts

Copenhagen, Apr. 27.

A "little war" has broken out between Denmark and her former colony, Iceland, over some 2,000 mediaeval Icelandic manuscripts which have been in Danish possession for hundreds of years.

The controversy, which has been latent for several years, flared up recently and resulted in meetings of the Danish Foreign Affairs Committee, exchanges of notes between the Danish and Icelandic Govern- ments and a daily polemic between the newspapers of the two countries. The subjects of the controversy, the so-called Icelandic manu- scripts, are now either in the library of Copenhagen University or in the Royal Danish Library.
