TIN CIRCLES WORRIED
Auguries Not Too Good Agreement Needed
By SYDNEY S. GAMPELL
Reuter's Financial Editor
Partly for seasonal reasons, June was by far the least gratifying month since last autumn for Britain's dollar transactions.
Thanks to an increase in U.S. aid from $13 million in May to $28 million in June and to the payment of $10 million in June on the EPU surplus for May, the June increase of $46 million in the reserves was respectable, and well up to the increase of $48 million in May, though far below earlier mouths.
But the earned surplus in June was only $12 millions, compared with $34 million in May and with brilliant figures of more than $100 million in five of the seven previous months.
British And U.S. Attitudes To Wheat Pact
As the summer months are the worst time of the year for Britain's dollar reserves, on both the income and the outgo sides, it is all to the good that Britain is still running on the right side: surplus is betler than any lapsing into a defell,
But the surplus. is sudly diminished one and some of the auguries are none too good. As their increased level of $2,367 million, the reserves arc tha highest since early 1952 but still far below the mid-1951 pouk of $3,867 million.
