Industry In Britain: Hopes Of Recovery Before The Spring

During the early part of last week I was in Manchester, and I discussed the recent set-back in the cotton industry and the subsequent recovery.

I returned to London with very definite hopes. To sum up the outlook, there is a prospect that by next Spring there will be a shortage of yarn.

The broad picture of recent events may be sum- marised in the following way.

The set-back in the textile trades, which began in the middle of 1951. was due to a world-wide increase in produc- tion, which naturally led to a contraction in our exports.
