Clark had his gun ready by the Hashboard of the car--and when the stars

W

'HEN, the light burns until three in the morning in a Chelsea studio flat off King's Road--it is Joan Greenwood staying up late reading, reading, reading play scripts and saying No, No, No.

Why these Noes, when every _play,film, and TV producer in town... is dashing round with his latest offers? A desire to be difficult? Tem- perament to tense?

I say neither, and I'll give you the reason in the dictionary de- finition-theme word of the week- PLAIN: “instinctive discernment." That is the Greenwood Nair, and it explains her feeling that now she should wait la play a part she can believe in, "not something I have to apologise for afterwards."

IT'S UNEXPECTED The Greenwood flair pops up unexpectedly. In "What's My Ling?" with

rhinestone earrings and wrong

guesses, her flair was to make men like me want to rush over to help her.

FLAIR for knowing when to change her line. So, after a TV parlour game, came the intensely dramatic. "The Doll's House" and sure success-with a demand from the BBC to repent it. "But why repeat it?" she asks. "Something new, please.")

FLAIR for finding her own private fun by disappearing for a couple of days at Christmas and playing a clown (unknown to any one) in a circus. The other

day I saw Joan Greenwood in a film made in France "Mr Peek-a-Boo." Flair again. Watch how she glides in a quaint black-cat costume as a burglar.
