PRESSURE IN AMERICA FOR HIGHER TARIFFS

ON IMPORTS OF WOOL

Washington, Oct. 1.

American wool growers' fears in United States markets of huge 1952 wool top carry-overs from Uruguay and Argentina have occasioned a renewal of demands for some form of increased wool protection under tariff laws.

The Agriculture Department, in current hearings on the subject being held by the Tariff Commission, has suggested a temporary special import fee of up- proximately 16 cents per clean pound.

Some United States growers support this.

Some want a flexible fee based on United States parity' prices. Some ask for a flat increase in wool tariffs and some think that quotas should be imposed rather than tariffs,
