A party of 13 scientists are to spend three months this year exploring the Ruwenzori moun- tain range in Western Uganda, the so-called Mountains of the Moon. They are anxious, in particular, to find out what caused the formation of the Great Rift Valley.
This great fissure, 1,500ft deep and up to 40 miles wide, cuts through the East Atrican plateau. It is believed to have been caused by a gigantic sub- sidence, preceded and followed by volcanic activity.
To reach the mountain the péientists will have to pass through zones of remarkable vegetation; thick forests, and bamboo, a belt of tree heathers whose branches are draped in. mosses and lichens to an Alpine zone, 11,000 high, where glout. ¦'lobella flourish...
