EMPIRE INVASION OF AAA GLAMOUR-ITALIAN STYLE
CHAMPIONSHIPS WAS SUCCESSFULLY REPULSED
By "RECORDER"
The Olympic teams of Australia, Nigoría and the Gold Coast, plus odd South Africans; Indians, Irishmen, Belgians, Danes, Yugoslava and Displaced Persons from the Baltic countries competed against Britain's best at the AAA Championships at the White City, London, on June 20 and 21 and came away with two first places, two seconds and six thirds. In 1948 the visitors took eight first places.
One of the strongest teams Australia has ever sent to the Olympic Games managed one first place, two seconds and one third. In 1948 the Australians took four AAA Championships and quite a share of the place medals, so the explanation that they take a long time to get acclimatised to England can hardly be put forward. It was a chilly day that the Championships were held on and this fact may account for the lack of success of the Nigerians and Gold Coasters. No fewer than 11 sprinters who are going to the Olymple Games at Helsinki made the second round of the 100 Yards sprint Championship.
