GREATEST SEASON EVER IN BRITISH ATHLETICS
TO A FINE
OFF TO
By "RECORDER"
It is most unusual to see British athletes turn
START
out international class performances before the month of June, but this year it has become a commonplace feature of athletic meetings in England for two or three performances of such calibre every time there is a gathering of Britain's aspirants to the Olympic team.
The first batch of good performancès has always been reserved for the British Games at the White City, run in conjunction with the Inter-County Championships. These take place on Saturday, May 31, and Monday, June 2, but by May 17, a fortnight before this normal major warm-up for the senson, two English athletes hrive vaulted over 18 feet, two have thrown the javelin over 200 feet and five others are near or over 180 feet, six have passed 44 feet in the shot put and seven high jumpers have cleared 6 feet 1 inch.
however,{ In no other event, has the standard bren higher than in the Three Mile Hua. Three English distance runners have already beaten 14 minutes
three 10 seconds, already under 14:20 more under 14:30.
