A flash of light in the skies north-west of here today signalled the explosion of the atom bomb in the “Operation Big Shot" phase of the Spring Nevada proving grounds tests.

The bomb was dropped from.the air. Within 30 seconds a light orange-coloured cloud began to rise above the desert floor.

The blast was like a giant flash-bulb or the far-off explosion of a phosphorous bomb sending out fiery sparks from its arched top on the "horizon.
