If the Japanese Government decides that it is wise to take advan- tage of Britain's present embarrassment by demanding payment in dollars for certain selected deliverles it ought to be given a clear warning of the long-term "consequences, says the "Financial Times" this morning. There can be no justification for placing the contract recently con- cluded for 100,000 tons of steel outside the existing payments agreement on the ground that steel is a dollar material any more than the Sterling Area would be justified in demanding dollars from Japan for Malayan rubber, it adds.
