COUNSEL CRITICISES BANK'S APPLICATION TO TENANCY TRIBUNAL

Compensation Offer To Tenants Increased This Morning

Criticism of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation to the effect that they were using one part of the Landlord and Tenant Ordinance to obtain premises cheap and another section to evict tenants was levelled by Mr A. J. Clifford, Counsel for the opponents, at the resum- ed hearing in the Tenancy Tribunal of an application by the Bank for exemption of certain premises in order to erect an eight-storey branch at a cost of two million dollars at the junction of Nathan Road and Argyle Street, Kowloon.

Mr Clifford sald that it was known that land with tenants.cost $40 per aquara foot whereas vacant possession was at $80 per 'square. "For a rich Institution like the Bank, it seems to me to be the last word in meanness," declared Mr Clifford.

The Hon Leo d'Almada, QC, with whom also appeared↑ Mr John McNeill, QC, 'for the applicants, announced this: morning that the Bant was prepared to increase the offer of compensation from $35,000 to $50,000 to be divided pro
