WAR FRONT
Tokyo, Jan. 9.
Action quickened on the western Korean battlefront yesterday, with the Chinese using the biggest number of troops in the last two months to counter United Nations attacks.
The Chinese brought in at first two battalions of troops to repel United Nations infantrymen to regain lost ground near Panmunjom.
Then, as United Nations attacks got stronger, the Chinese threw in another battalion, bringing the de. fence force to approximately 2,000.
The latest reports from the 8th Army said United Nations infantrymen had so far failed to gain their objectives.
An 8th Army spokesman identified
as South Koreans troops who since Dec. 28 have been fighting to get back ground the Chinese took from them near Panmunjom, the armistice talks site.
The spokesman said the South Koreans yesterday temporarily gained ground, but lost it quick- !y when the Chinese threw in il 2.000-man force to repel them. Elsewhere along the 145-mile frozen battleline, bolh sides patrolled cautiously and sonally clashed,
