big difference between the Auxiliary Fire service and any other defence organisation is that no-one is directed to the 'AFS.' It is still an entirely voluntary affair, although its members now come under the compulsory call-up rules, and should an emergency arise, would be paid the same as their opposite numbers in the Regular Brigade. This branch has been functioning for close on a year, and consists of Chinese and non- Chinese-all volunteers.

Combined Services XI A Poor

Make

Start

Seven wickets by R. Craig at a cost of 62 runs enabled the Colony to dismiss the Hongkong and Singapore Combined Services XI for a rather low first innings total of 144 runs in the first day's play of their three-day cricket match yesterday.

Left with 16 minutes to bat, the Colony XI had scored. 10 runs for the loss of one wicket when stumps were drawn.

Skipper Alderson of the Ser- vices won the toss and decided to take first lease of the wicket, which appeared to be on the slow side, under an overcast sky.

Cosh and Kingsford opened the innings to the bowling of Teh and Craig,

Kingsford was missed in the slips on the second ball.

Runs came very slowly in the face of some consistent bowling, the 20 being holsted after almost 40 minutes.

I

Arthy and Dedge opened the Colony innings at 8.15 3 the fast bowling combination of Daven- port and Bailey.

In the second eve; and Bailey's

Arz over, Dodge was cican bowled by an extra fast bali.

Ruffet joined Arthy and both played out the remaining period.
