The long-term plan for oil refining envisages an increase in capacity to 20m, tons by 1952-53, and the

is the second substantial dividend from this plan.
The change in the pattern of production here has, of course, changed the pattern of importe as well.
As might be exported imports of crude oil have been increasing sharply, while there has been a relative decline in
imports of petroleum products.,

The greatest growth in crude
Britain oll supplies to the last three years has been from Bahrein, Kuwait and Qatar: these fields supplied 13 per cent of United Kingdom per cent in 1950. But the supplies from iran huve been growing, too. In 1048 just over one-fifth of crude oil imports came
from 1950 Iran; by
the proportioa had risen to over one-quarter.
It is clear that if the trouble in Persia 'were to boil over. It the Persian Government were to go to the length of stopping crude oil supplies altogether, it would be in the short me a serious matter for Britain.
Production elsewhere could no doubt be expanded; and in present circumstances the dol- lam could be found to pay for it, if dollars were needed. But' since other countries, and notably the United States, would also be seeking to switch their purchases, it could not be an easy matter.
IMPORTANCE OF ABADAN
