By "GRANDSTAND”

The stellar performances of an individual which contribute to a team's success are often lost sight of in a feverish Softball flag chase when only the final score counts, but fans will be given an opportunity this week of witnessing the cream of local diamond talent in a pair of all-star contests.

These post-campaign exhibitions, which will wind up the senson, will see the Blue and Gold sections of the Senior and Junior Leagues cross bats to acttle dispute which has been hotly discussed by fans ever since it was decided to split the League into two sections.

Gordon And August

There used to be an old joke "The best person to follow on the racecourse la Lord Lonsdale, Why? Well, you'll get a chance of picking up a half-smoked cigar.”

This mania of "following" something or someone is very popular among backers. Some pick out horses at the start of the season, and back them every time they

run,

Others will have a staking system on a jockey's mounts, or concentrate on the horses trained by one or two trainers.

Hyperion And The Sons Of Gainsborough

By NIGEL GEE

In the whole history of racing in England only fourteen colts have won the Triple Crown-the 2,000 Gulnens, Derby and St Leger. Two of these, Gay Crusader and Gainsborough, were by Bayardo. Admittedly their victories were won in wartime when the classics were run at Newmarket, but they cannot be blamed for that.

Bayardo was a great racehorse. He won the Sb Leger, Eclipse Stakes and Ascot Gold Cup; he was in fact only beaten three' times in 25 races...Gay Crusader enjoyed a crowded hour of glory, for he was a fallure at stud. Gainsborough, however, was as successful in his retirement as he was on the racecourse.
