French forces in Indo-China have launched an offensive against Communist rebel troops near Haiphong in what is believed to be an attempt to forestall Communist plane.

HE immediate significance of Mr Aneurin Beyan's shock tactics, declaring open war between the Labour Party's Left and Right Wings at a critical stage in the Battle of the Budget at Westminster, cannot be too swiftly assessed. That crisis has loomed, threatening the downfall of the Govern- ment and an early general election, is plain. And the irony of a combination with the extreme Socialist coterie to bring that about will not, of course, act as a deterrent to Mr Churchill if opportunity is handed to him on a plate by Mr Bevan. Nevertheless, hasty judgment could prove itself false. The Labour Party cleavage has for a long time been coming to a head, a process accelerated by Mr Gaitskell's behind- the scenes amack at Mr Bevan, a fear- some political heavyweight, by refusing to be bullied out of his decision to call on National Health Service beneficiaries to pay half_the_cost_of_new_spectacles_ and dentures.
