NEWCASTLE-BLACKPOOL CUP FINAL AT WEMBLEY SHOULD BE A THRILLER

Says WALTER

WALTER PILKINGTON

A team with a glorious past, Newcastle United, and one with a great present, Blackpool, are the Football Association Cup finalists of 1951. Both reached the final stage and the right to play at Wembley Stadium, London by two-one victories in semi-final replays. Another coincidence is that not one goal was scored in the first meetings of New- castle and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the other pair, Blackpool and Birmingham.

It is 39 years since both semi-finals were drawn and, strangely enough, both results in 1912 were also all-nil. The ultimate Cup winners in that season, Barnsley, So is Birmingham, Some thought It was then, as now, a Second Division club. might be an omen-that Birmingham might compensate for its Cup Final defeat of 1931 by the club's West Bromwich neighbours, that there might even be another all-Midlands Final with Wolverhampton the other team. Blackpool ended the parallel and Newcastle the speculation..

Everything considered, a Newcastle-Blackpool final has the most romantic ap- pen. Both sides play stylish football. Their clash has glamour. It could be as specta- cular a final as the one three years ago when Manchester United knocked out Black- pool by four-two. That was Blackpool's first appearance in the final. Now the club gets a second chance.

MCC Coaching Recommendations

The Marylebone Cricket Club's General Survey of Coaching, which looks and reads like a Government White Paper, is being acted upon by at least one county. In Sussex the authorities have got down to teaching the young idea with a commendable thoroughness.

Immediately April was here the scheme started. A county Cricket Council had been set up to embrace all the Schools Associations, the county's Cricket Association and the Women's Association. 48 games masters and two games mistresses-went along to the Hove Ground where Mr H. P. Crabtree of Essex and coach "Patsy Hendren were waiting for them.
