The Connoisseurs MacArthur To Appear Alleged

A reader sends the above photograph of an interesting antique putty coloured jug, which he recently discovered in an old curiosity shop in Macro.

The Jug which is richly emborsed bears, figures of two knights in armours engaged in a Jousting encounter. The design also includes foxes' heads, and is encircled with fleur-de-lis, with a grape vine border at the base. It bears the imprint "Fablished by V. Ridgway Son, & Co., Han- ley, September 1, 1840." It holds about a ball gallon.

COMMENT OF THE DAY

Mr Truman's Broadcast

THE significance of President Tru- THE

man's broadcast to the United States this week was contained, not so much in his explanation as to why he found it necessary to relieve General MacArthur of his commands, as to his insistence that the prime objective of the United Nations was to bring the Korea war to a speedy of the end, followed by unification country and measures to ensure that there should be no further aggres

every sion. These are alms which decent-thinking person must applaud. Modern warfare, whether localised or widespread, is terrible in its effects, and it is timely to remember that the chief sufferers in the present conflict are the people of Korea, whose towns and cities are devastated and their countryside ravaged, President Tru- man apparently saw in General Mac- Arthur's expressed policies a negation of the principle that an honourable. peace based on negotiation is of more moment than military achievements. The dismissal of MacArthur is tragic, not only because it brings a brilliant career to such an Inglorious end, but, because there is a danger the action will split the United States politically and sentimentally at a time when the United Nations needs its undivided support and Influence. More than anything else is it likely to destroy the bipartisan agreement concerning foreign policion and actions upon which a good deal of United States leadership in world affairs has de pended. The bipartisan; undertaking, it is acknowledgod, Has been, growing thin, yet it has served, and can still serve a purpose of considerable im portance. Its total abrogation would, to say the least, bo unfortunate. Note worthy is the fact that as "there have been no reports for American"

were

reactions to President Truman's broad- cast. Yet the address was of first-rate significance because it was based on the theme that the United Nations aims and principles must take pre- cedence over individual conceptions of how to settle the Korea problem. In this respect the President made an appeal to the sound commonsense of the American people and his argu- ments

irrefutable. President. Truman's three points were: 1, the fighting must stop; 2, concrete steps must be taken to ensure that fighting will not break, out again; 3; there must be an end to aggression. And presumably these points will form the basis for the impending restatement of the UN aims and objectives in Korca. Undeniably it requires an ap propriate gesture from the Chinese. Communists to make possible the realisation of this programme through negotiation. And admittedly there is no guarantee visible at the moment that the Paking Government is ready to make the gesture. But the way is clear for such a move and for this

alone President

reason

Truman's

broadcast was of inestimable value.' Moreover, the President removed another doubt: there is to be no ap- peasement. Refusal at this time to take the risk of extending the Korea hostilities into a world war is not a sign of weakness, but of sound calcu Iation and proof of a genuine desire to achieve peace through statesman- ship. The counsel of caution, at this time is still more likely to bring de, sired results than spectacular, but rash military actions. The first duty of the United Nations is to hold on to the initiative in the difficult, but not Im-i possible tank of bringing to an end the hostilities In Korea.
