FOR POHANG AIRFIELD Americans capture high ground near Chinju

REDS MASSING FOR TAEGU DRIVE

Tokyo, August 11.

A tough North Korean spearhead struck deeply into strategic Pohang today as the American offensive rolled to the edge of Chinju and along the Southern coast 70 miles South West. Allied troops are still fighting for the important port and airfield at Po- hang tonight. The Reds took half the city in daylong street fight- ing but the airfield South of the town was still being used by Ameri-. can planes flying 10-minute sorties in rocke: attacks on the nearby

enemy.

On the Southern front, the 35th Regimental Combat Team captured the high ground immediately East of Chinju and there were reports the Communists were evacuating that key town, an Eighth Army com- muniquo reported.

The high ground runs to al point about two miles from blasted Chinju.

American Marines rammed into Kosong on the Southern cour shortly before noon at the town was secure by mild-afternoon. AP Correspondent Tom Lainbert

reported,

The Marines ran into fairly heavy opposition in taking Ko- song, which they did not reach yesterday, although reports reach- ing Tokyo sufd they had entered it then,

Between these two anchors of the curving battle line, the Com- puts are building up what o MacArthur spokesman termed the **rentesbentibes kanonitration ·péri mile of, troops on the front.

Between four and five divi. Flone are being grouped around Wargwan, key point along the Maktong River, for a probable a frontalīnismalt on Tangu.

The Eighth Army said the 38th Regiment had "recessfully com. nleted its phose of the first major United Nations counter-offensive of the Korcon war" by taking the heights treating Chinju.

Fartier South, the Fifth Regi- mental Combat Team continued Its drive, as part of the same offensive, after beating down a Red aack today, AP Correspon- dient Don Whitehead reported.
