New York, August 7.
Soaring rubber prices, scare-buying of tyres, and recard use of rubber by Q:S. industry may lead soon to an increase in the amount of synthetic rubber in American car tyros.
The amount of man-made rubber in tyres has been declining since the war and now averages less than 40 per cent. Plagued by rising prices for natural rubber, tyre manufacturers have been buying more synthetic and clamouring for the government to produce more. Three more of the synthetlej Meanwhile the Seiberling Hub- plants are being taken out of mothballs, but their products will not be much available before the first of next year.
Meanwhile, if the government wants more natural rubber for its stockpile, it could order a grealer percentage of synthetic used in tyres as it has the authority to under the rubber net of 1950. Some say I may order that as much as 30 per cent of the rubber used in tyres by synthetic.
The runaway rubber prices- whether or not caused by spect– lators in, Singapore-have led the New York Commodity Exchange
for third time in less than a month to raise, its margin réqui- rements on trading in futures.
Margins of almost 50 per cent will be required, or $5,000 on a contract, which is for the pur- chase or sale of -22,400 pounds of rubber for future delivery. This doubles the previous margin re quirement of $2,500.
Still another uncertainty pla- ques the rubber industry. It has to guess just what military needs for rubber wll be.
Until the synthetic plants get into full production, tyre makers he anxious are going to be on seat.
