Sight-seeing along the Praya

Pilot boat

To layman eyes it looks no different from an ordinary sampan. But shipping circles know it is one of the speediest Harbour utility craft under sails.

t

Exclusively used for the pilot- ing of ships into the Harbour, the pilot boat, na cailed, is specially designed 10 achlove maximum monoeuvrability and strength to withstand strong; eur- renta nu winds.

This is of prime necessity be- cause the pilat bont has to be tled up alonggakile a cruising stea- mer and towed at an average apeed of 10 kpots n the pllot guides her in at the helm aboard.

There are five harbour pilot boats in Hong Kong waters. Only one of them has a wooden cabin erected pit to provide permanent raclter from the elements. Others use canvas sheets for protection.

The pilot boat

The pilot craft has a rounded, botton with a very shallow keel. Like many other sampans, stone blocks are used as ballnat to stablize the craft,

The boat has usually about 500 to 800 lbs of stone blocks placçel evenly in its bottom. Normally, Is tonnage amounts to five to six tans. It measures from 25 to 35 long with a five or six-foot beam.

It is believed that under cur- rent conditions, it will cost up- proximately $4000 to build a pilot boat, inclusive of fittings other equipment.
