FOREST FIRES
SWEEP THROUGH
NOVA SCOTIA
threatened Halifax, May 31. Six major forest fires swept Nova Scotia today, covering some 18,000 acres of rich timber land on a 200-mile front.
A monster fire in a wide area between Halifax and a point 12 miles East of Como Lake has rip-| ped through 15,000 acres of tim- ber. The big blaze set-off 25 smaller fires and the entire fire zone was in dames and smoke to- day, entirely out of control.
"With the right wind, the main blaze could sweep right down, to the coast to Sheet Harbour," said the chief forester, David Dyer.
Sheet Harbour is
about 50 miles North East of Halifax. Mr. Dyer warned, "It tlie blaze sweeps down the coast, it will wipe out the Halifax pulp and paper company industry."
A weary band of 1,500 firenght- ers mostly volunteers, fought losing battle against the flames during the night. All available trucks, axes and picks and about 6,000 feet of hose were thrown into the flight. Aircraft left Mon- treal with more hose for the Arefighters and a mobile Red Cross canteen will leave Halifax to feed volunteers on the spot.
Further along Nova Scotia's long fire front, flames ate through lush forest areas Loward, the counties of Pictou and Guysboro. Several buildings in the path of the blazes have been devoured by the hungry flames. Others were
threatened this morning.
Narrow escapes
*
More than a dozen pulp mi workers narrowly escaped flory death last night when they were nearly engulfed and trap, ped by flames which changed direction rapidly with the wind, voering around the area.
At Salmon River in Cape Bro- ton County, another fire was still out of control and spreading slowly. A new fire broke out late yesterday at Echo. Harbour in Halifax County, bul not con- sidered an immediate danger.
A major blaze at Truro Helghts, on the West Coast of Nova Scotia, was now under con- trol. Neighbouring New Bruns- wick was already hard hit by the wave of fires. The main blaze still

Petrol from coal demonstration
Louisiana, Missouri, Juna: 1.
A new demonstration of making petrol from coal was begun here by the U.S. Bureau of 'Mines. Each day about 100 tons of cool, ground nearly as fine as talcum powder, is converted into about 150 barrels of petrol, plus, 50 barrels of useful oils. This is done by adding hydrogen.
The liquid fuels that can bey made this way are about 60 times

This demonstration aims to show that American clench has brought the prospect of making coal-petrol close to that of na- tural petrol. Also, that thetic fucis from coal,

PEACE NEGOTIATIONS BURMA PROBABLE IN
Rangoon, May 31,
The Prime Minister of Burma, Thokin Nu, said today that Government representatives were in contact with rebel Karen tribesmen and that there is evory possibility they will no-`. gotiate a peace.
If the peace talks are successful, it will be the second of Burma's three rebel groups to agree
to lay down its arms.
The Government announced last week that the White Band PVO (People's Volunteer Or- ganisation) had agreed on a No such agree- .ceasefire pact.

The terms for the surrender of the PVO's 10,000 members are still being worked out here. PVO Vice-President Bo La Yaung said last week that the success of the talks hinged on the decision of the Government to permit his groups' leaders to regroup into a new political party.
Thakin Nu said today that the Communists would also be eligi- ble for the Government amnesty, provided they accept its condi-
