threatened Halifax, May 31. Six major forest fires swept Nova Scotia today, covering some 18,000 acres of rich timber land on a 200-mile front.
A monster fire in a wide area between Halifax and a point 12 miles East of Como Lake has rip-| ped through 15,000 acres of tim- ber. The big blaze set-off 25 smaller fires and the entire fire zone was in dames and smoke to- day, entirely out of control.
"With the right wind, the main blaze could sweep right down, to the coast to Sheet Harbour," said the chief forester, David Dyer.
Sheet Harbour is
about 50 miles North East of Halifax. Mr. Dyer warned, "It tlie blaze sweeps down the coast, it will wipe out the Halifax pulp and paper company industry."
A weary band of 1,500 firenght- ers mostly volunteers, fought losing battle against the flames during the night. All available trucks, axes and picks and about 6,000 feet of hose were thrown into the flight. Aircraft left Mon- treal with more hose for the Arefighters and a mobile Red Cross canteen will leave Halifax to feed volunteers on the spot.
Further along Nova Scotia's long fire front, flames ate through lush forest areas Loward, the counties of Pictou and Guysboro. Several buildings in the path of the blazes have been devoured by the hungry flames. Others were
threatened this morning.
