godown firm
A misnomer which has puzzled many a person in Hong Kong is the name of the Island's first foreign public godowns' and `ät prosent its targest China Provident Loan and Mortgagó. Company Limited.'
Through the passage of time during the past 52
years, the "China Provident""Kwan Yick" -has developed from a loan-mortgage firm into one of the Colony's most up-to-date go downs organisations which can now accom modate as much as 140,000 measurement tons:
Established in 1898 along the West Point Praya, the originalį premises to a casual observer look exactly the same as they were in the late 19th century. But a closer scrutiny will re- veal the extensive internal Improvement that has been carried out in the past 52 years.
The "China Provident" began business as a loan and mortgage building scheme-thus bearing its current name. Cargo serving as mortgage security was stored in the godowns.
At a later stage in the progress of the company's business, it was decided to accept cargo on a hire system. This subsidiary service grew and eventually necessitated the acquisition of more godowns to accommodate the Inhux of

To maintain is service, the "Chioa: Provident" has a fleet of 12. new steel 108-ton lighters, a 400-hp diesel lug, twọ launches. and nine lorries for land tran- sport. Three morb fighters, are under construction.
The foundation was found to be intact and, to serve as tem- porary storage, Nissen huts were erected. The building programme plans to rebuild modern godowns on the present site on a more permanent basis.
Space shortage According to Mr. A. D. Lear- month, Secretary of the "China Provident, the godowns have now nearly renched saturation point with the prevailing shortage or cargo storage.
The real rehabilitation work will begin with the launching of the new building programme, hea sald, "At present we have only crecled femporary Nisson buls to serve gedowns on our war damaged sites," he added.
Mr. Learmonth disclosed that two of the existing godowns→→ Nos, 17 and 18, both aggregating = land area of 95,910 square feet will, according to plans at hand, be pulled down for the recon- struction of a larger and bettor equipped building with an aren of 45,000 square feet, on the same
site. Additional land space has been obtained adjacent to the godowns.
The senior official also revealed that the China Provident". hds very little "stranded" Shanghai cargo. "We have been very pard ful in our choice in accepting cargo," he declared.
"The name of the company has been somewhat of a misnomer in Its
current operation," Mr. Learmonth added.
