Move for world talks on tin
Paris; March 30.
The 14-nation International Tin Study Group today agreed to ask the United Nations Secretary- General, Mr. Trygva Lio, to call an early conference to discuss a commodity control agreement on tin.
The United States opposed the move. Britain, her colonial and dependent territories, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Bolivia, Holland and Indo nesia supported it, while China, Thailand and France abstained.
The Group estimated that production would exceed con-
sumption for commercial pur- Netherlands'
poses by about 45,000 tons in 1950 and higher figures later.
It extimated unrestricted con- sumption of tin for commercial purposes at 127,000 long tons in 1950, with production in 1950 estinated at 172,000 long tons compared with 161,000 long tons last year.
The latter estimate was based on the assumption that political and social stability in the main production countries would exist.
It appeared likely, the Group agreed, that substantial tonnages of tin would be absorbed by the United States for strategic stock- piling purposes over and above the demand for commercial pur- chases.
U.S. viows
Mi. M. A. Nicholas, United Stalen
representative, told # Press conference that the United States felt that a conference was not desirable at this tinc.
They did not object to the idea
a con-
of control of tin in some form nor did they object to ference some time.
But they thought it advisable to have discussions
on a draft agreement before calling a con- ference. It may be found that a more finished document may be agreed upon than the
