Opposition to Government's proposed increase in direct taxation was yolc- ed by Chinese merchants at a meeting of the Chinese General Cham- ber of Commerce yesterday.

New building for Wah Yan College
The first and was out on the site, of the new Wah Yan College, Kowloon yesterday, by Mr. F. 3. Ko, President of the Wah Yan College Past Students' Areociation.
The alte is on Waterloo Road, on the strip of ground between the road and the now Government flats in King's Park.
The alte formation is estimated to take five months. It will entall the culting of a hill to the height of 43 feet above the level of the adjoining road and the filling an) Jovelling of the.. flat ground beside the rallway in the Fo Pang valley, for use as sports fields.
The college bulldings will be on the hill. The main clain-room section will run parallel to the road. At the Nathan Road and there will be the administration block and the auditorium, at the other end the chapel. It was originally intended to bulld the gymnasium in the middle, but this will now be bullt, on à lower level.

be fully supplied with laboratorios, arts and crafts rooms, muile rooms, library and all the other essentials of an up-to-date school.
