STAMP NEWS

By "TETE-BECHE”

Recently a London deolar wrote to me as follows:- "You will no doubt be pleased to get the 2s. and 5s, new Bermuda perfs, as these were in vory short supply at the Crown Agents. My order for the 5s, was cut by half, so, in conse- quence, some of my new issue customers will be unluckly. So short is the supply that, in the City they are selling at 20s. the pair." The Crown Agents have released the 5s. value for Nigeria with perforations 142, similar to the issue of 1948.

The latter was selling freely at 25s, but one should be able to get it much cheaper now as theref is no colour change. The id, value of Barbados has recently been relcased in bright blue-green colour with perf. 14 x 142. The 10, 15, 25 and 50 cent values of Singapore have been released in the new 17-18 gauge with colours unchanged.

A homeside dealer has the following advertisement in a po- pular magazine:—

"NEW ZEALAND. Watermark- ed Varieties.

S.G. 680 watermarked sideways. 5.G. 688a watermarked upright. The pair mint, 50s."

These are the 1s and 2s values of the current King's Head set of New Zealand. It might be worth while looking through

your stamps to see if you have the varletles.

Niue's new set will not now be issued until June 1 instead of May 31 as originally announced.

The new 50 cents Canadian issue to commemorate the new oil industry in Allerta depicts a scene on the oil@elds complete with derricks and lots of smoke.

Since January 1950 the current stampa of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika have been valid for postal puropses only, instead of for "Postage and Revenue" as heretofore. Special stamps for re- venue purposes are being issued.

PROBLEM TO

U.S. GOV'T

TO U.S.

Washington, March 11.

President Harry Truman may have to decide soon whether this country should press plans for a Japanese peace treaty.

His advisors appear to be split on the issue, with some holding American intérests would be served best by delaying a treaty indefinitely, while others insist a Japanese peace settle- ment is essential to U. S. Far Eastern policy."

Bovin and the French Foreign Minister, M. Robert Schuman, In six or eight weeks, the Japanese treaty is undoubtedly one of theichen issues which will arlso. Some of Mr-Acheson's aides-feel-he-mustuu then have a clearly determined American policy.
