Piet Hein leading in the
Corinthian Series
(By "MAINSHEET BLOCK”)

In a South East breeze on Saturday, seven Dragons started and of theso, Piet Hein and La Linda made the best starts, while Tromp and Ecstacy, over-keen, had to work back and rocross lino. Piet Hein rounded the first mark Customs Cruisers in the lead. The next two legs, reaching to Kowloon Rock and back to the Port Health buoy, were uneventful, thought the wind was increasing.
At the Port Health buny, Plet Hein si led, followed Ly La Linda, Trony
and Ecstacy,
with the rest some way behind.
On the next leg; a best to Lye- mun Deacon, Piet Hein ereased her lead while La Linda lost two places; from here for the run back to No. 2, huny spinnakers were halted, and hoisted faster than in the previous Corinthian races.
Piet Hein kept her lead to the end; Trump fell back somewhat during the run and had the mis- fortune to tear her mainsall on the beat back to the line.
Time
spent on hurried repairs cost her four plures,

The six Jubilees made a`good start bunched together on Satur- day; fleeching, just over the line, was recalled and his return gave a certain amount of agitation to his neighbours,
On the first leg. a long beat to Channell Rocks, Harmony, whose owner was helped by his wife and
small son, appeared to be salling
closer and faster than the re- mainder,
From the distance mark the run continued to No. 2

Harmony, in the lead, hauled her wind and then appeared to come about almost on the buoy, which she must have louched as she retired.

Off-side trap can cut both ways
(By BILLY STEEL)
In-this-article on the off-sido law, I propose-to-
discuss its most controversial aspect--the ́off- side trap.
From all communications which I have received on the point, I condense the questions into
two.
Is the off-side trap bad play? | tiòn, but before the ball reache Can anything-bo-done to stop him it hits, defender),
Whether we like it or not, the off-side trap in part of the game today, and the real question to be asked is: "What can teams and individual players do about
In itself it is not bad play: the criticism should really be levelled at the forwards who allow them- selves to be lured. Into It and caught.
It will continue to succeed wherever the attack peralata in the long swinging pass upfield dfear of defenders, with a for- ward racing up to collect it. Often that forward is on-alde when he begins to run, but in the aplit-second in which judgment has to be given the human ele-
ment errs on the wrong side.
Depands on time-lag
between the pass being made and It depends upon the time-ing the referee blowing his whistle.
If the signal for off-side is given before the ball touches the de- fender, then the decision stands. But if the ball is played by the defender before the referee signals then he would allow play to go on, as the forward to whom the puss has been made has been played on-alde,
This
point might explain why, to, some spectators,' s、 re- terce appare to ignore à lines. man's signal,
In the caso quoted the linesman' would no doubt have wayed for off-side, but subsequent play. cancelled it out
I could carry on indefinitely with such questions, but there age
Answers to off-side trap other topics which need our atten
There are answers to the off- side trap, such as the low, short- passing game, or the long dribble upfield 50 successfully exploited by Stanley Matthews and Willie Waddell.
A word of warning to those on the other side of the fence who would exploit the off-side trap.
It is a dangerous practice for the Inexperienced, as it calls for 4 really good understanding Without among the defenders. that, a team is liable to be caught In its own trap.
I am asked if an attackeržis
on-sido if he is level with a full- back and has only the goalkeeper between him and the goal-line.
The answer is "No." The law says that he must have two opponents dearer to the goal-lino than himself, This Ja a point often overlooked.
-
Must bo in front
On the other hand, if a player is level with the ball when it is played he cannot be off-side. He must be in front of the ball to be, breaking the law.
Then, can a player be off-side if a shot from a colleague re- bounds to him from the goal

It certainly can. But any such group must have a copy of tho Laws to keep them on the right track.
