London, November 2.

The Government announced today that it has de- cided to put an upper limit of £760,000,000 on defence expenditure during the current financial year ending next March. Lord Addison, Lord Privy Seal, made the announce- ment in the House of Lords today when open- ing a two-day debate on the economy cuts announced by the Prime Minister, Mr. Clement Attlee, last month.

He will be accompanied by the Kachin President, Sima Duna Sinwa Nawg, whose territory borders on to China.

These economies include a £30,000,000 cut in defence in and about a full

Lord Addison said that penditure on defence had forecast for the year at £760,– 000,000, but considerable supple- mentary estimates had been put in amounting to £30,000,000 and

even the figure of £790,000,000 was not likely to have been the

end of the story.

However, after the most search- ing examination, the Government had decided that the Agure £760,000,000 must

He had been asked if he could announce details of the economic Proposed in the National Servic scheme.

Mr. Alexander added tha national, service remained a: essential feature of Britain's defence policy, though its prac. | tical workings would continu to be kept under close review- to ensure that it met the need of the Services as efficiently a possible.

Other political quarters have urged that compulsory service should operate on a ballot sys- tem which might result in de- ferred call-up for 200,000 of the 300,000 total of men annually available.
