Softball Committee Tackles Umpire Problem

(By "GRANDSTAND")

An umpire has a definite place in a game and it has been long recognised that the success or otherwise of a league depends on the cap- abilities of those” men.

The provision of suitable officials for games has always been a burning question with the Softball Association and, judging from the number of protests lodged last season, it would appear that the standard is on a down- word trend to the detriment of the popular pastime.

Realising the urgency of the situation, the General Committee of the Association tackled the problem

Derby Dismiss Middlesex For 139; Take First Innings Lead

London, August 25.

The County championship leaders, Middlesex, who need to win their final match against Derbyshire to make sure of at least sharing the champ- ionship, were given a shock today when Derbyshire dismissed them for 139, thus taking a first innings lead of 89.

But Derbyshire also found difficulty in making runs on a tricky pitch at Lord's, and at the close of play they were only 181 runs ahead with their last pair at the wicket.
