Mr. Glenvil Hall, Financial Secretary to the Traa- sury, indicated in the House of Commons to day that it is quite likely that the settlement of India's Sterling balances in Britain lies somo years ahead, perhaps five or ten.
Earlier, Mr. Leonard Gammons, Conservative, had asked what was the amount of the Sterling balance claimed as 'due to India at the end of the war, by how much it had been reduced at. the time of partition, and what the sums claim- ed by India and Pakistan are now.
in the Mr. Ball replied that Anuncial agreement of August 14. 1947, the Sterling assets of un- UvYded todlu were nut at £1,380,000,000, Be regretted that he could not bclose the size If the balances at other dates.
Such
evuid Information, n properly be given of the releaser from the Sterling balances would be made available when the cur- rent Opandul negotiations were completed.
Mr. Grummans: Will you deny that fairly large sums of Sterling have been in fact released with- cukhy corresponding Imports and that the case for the scaling clawn of these balances has been largely allowed to go by default? Mr. Hall: I do not think I can add to my answer. Negotințions are proceeding and an onnounce- ment will be made in due course.
Usual Practica
Mr. Oliver Stanley (Conserva- tive): Why must there be all this secrecy, about the Sterling balances? Surely we are entitled to know how much we have påld off aluce the Ogure mentioned by i the Financial Secretary.
