A Treasury official told Reuter: "I cannot imagine how such a ridiculous rumour regarding ster- ling could possibly have arisen." Such rumours come regularly from Paris. whenever the future of the franc is in question, but it is self- evident that sterling is incomparably stronger than the French franc.
