6 Wickets Down Tests Planned
Melbourne, Jan. 2.
The Indian tourists scored 262 runs for six wickets in the second day of the Third Test here at the close of play in reply to Australia's first innings total of 394.
A century opening partnership which is the highest by the Indians on the present tour- by Mankad, 116, and C. T. Sarwate, 36, gave India a good start in reply to Australia's first innings total of 394, but they failed to press home the advantage and were 262 for six at the close.
The Indians put up their best per- formance of the tour on a good Test wieter, with four wickets in hand and anly 132 runs behind.
After an uncertain start, during which Mankad was twice missed in the twenties, the opening batsmen played enterprising cricket and were (always ahead of the clock. They added the first 50 in 39 minutes, reached 100 in 73 minutes and had only been together for 20 minutes when Sarwate was caught wicket at 124.
