The Prime Minister, Mr. Clement Attlee, told Bri- tons in a countrywide broadcast tonight that Government's crisis programme of less food, more work and deepened austerity was neces- sary to put Britain back on its own feet, even if "our friends in America" adopted a plan to re- turn prosperity to Europe. "This is a situation as serious as any that has faced us in our long history." Mr. Attlee said. "We must therefore act vigorously and drastically."
