ECONOMIC CONFERENCE Britain To Take The Initiative? Formulating Needs Of Europe

London, June 12.

American officials in London today said they ex- pected Great Britain to take the initiative for calling a European economie- conference by mid-summer. The purpose of the conference will be. to formulate Europe's needs under General Marshall's proposals for American aid in European rehabilitation.

These sources said they do not expect Soviet Rus- sia or nations of the Soviet sphere of Eastern Europe to purticipate in the conference. They insisted, however, the decision rests with Russia. She will be welcomed if she decides to take part."

Johannesburg, June 12. The shortage of cuni may force the Railfanteln Estates Gold Mining Company to close down tomorrow, unless supplies nre received before then, the Company said today.

The goal position is not much better in Pretoria and Port Bizabeth. In Pretoria., tho power station has only three | and, a' half days supply, and the Port Elizabeth Municipal Coun- cil has urged the manufacturers and private cansumers to econo, mlee, as the colliers are unable to send any coal, owing to the truck shortage.

The Council is considering catting off the electric supplies for industrial purposes at week- ends.

The two power stations મા Johannesburg have three und five days of coal supply left, and the load on them is greater than ever. Reuter,
