An obvious Japanese manoeuvre lies behind the recent Thai credit to Japan amounting to 10,000,000 baht £900,000, according to British financial circles in London.
or
Tokyo, in concluding the agree- ment with Thailand, these circles observe, had three alms; first, to wrench Thai currency away from Sterling and absorb it in the Yen Bloc; second, to utilise the credit to get round the British and American economic embargo and the freezing of Japanese assets, and third, to use Thai economic submission as a lever towards completion of political subjuga-
tion.
The whole arrangement has been thinly disguised. Technically. in order to finance Thai exports to Japan. a credit was given by Thai private banking firm to a Japanese privile banking Arin. namely, The Thai Commercial Bank to the Yokohama Specie Bank.
Actually, it is well-known that the former is a Government con- trolled bank which finances Thai- land's musi important domestic and foreign trade, while the lai- ter is the financial agent of the Japanese Government for foreign transactions.
Sterling Peg
The reason Tokyo urgently needs Thai credit is that she in- rists on continued purchases of rice, tin and rubber from Thai- land. Thai currency has been on a gold basis and pegged to Sterl- ing for nine years. Consequent- ly, all Thailand's foreign trade has been effected in Sterling. The recent freezing of Japanese Sterl- ing assets paralysed the finance mechanism of Thai-Japanese trade. Hence a new apparatus had to be devised to enable Japan to continue her trade with Thai- land.
Under existing eircumstances, it is considered unlikely that Japan will be able to pay in gold or ex- ports to Thailand as a liability against Thailand's currency re- i serves.---Central News,
